For the past twenty three years, SBSLC has dedicated itself to empowering and educating Black scholars. SBSLC strives to be a catalyst for individual and community growth, uniting over 1,000 students and professionals to address pertinent issues and concerns through organized workshops. Over the years, a wide array of topics have been addressed, including personal finance and management, the history of jazz, professionalism, effective relationship building, and much more. Inspired by a legacy of diverse speakers and workshops, SBSLC 2012 is sure to be another success.

 

The theme for SBSLC 2012 is "In Pursuit of Refinement." It is our hope that through dynamic innovative workshops, participants are challenged to desire and achieve excellence in every area of their individual lives. An exciting array of topics has been chosen for this year's conference. Previous workshop topics include:

Are you interested in facilitating a workshop?

For the past 23 years, the Southwestern Black Student Leadership Conference has created the opportunity for African American students to assemble and further develop their leadership skills for the future. The 2012 Conference theme is "In Pursuit of Refinement."

This year we are incorporating "The Social Change Model of Leadership Development" into all aspects of our conference. This model offers key qualities necessary for proactive leadership such as: collaboration, consciousness of self, commitment, congruency, common purpose, controversy with civility, and citizenship. These "7 C's" promote will provide a core, component to the conference by offering motivating workshops that build upon this social change model. Attached is a brief description of the "Social Change Model of Leadership Development."

You are invited to submit a proposal for a workshop presentation. Topics for workshops included:

  • Health
  • Professionalism
  • Leadership
  • Gender Specific
  • Graduate Level Specific
  • Spirituality
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Fine Art/Culture
  • Relationships
  • Politics/Current Events
  • Financial Management
  • Education/Professional Programs
  • Media Representation

In addition to workshops, the conference will also host town-hall meetings. These meetings will give participants an opportunity to engage in peer discussion concerning various topics. Town-hall facilitators are needed to assist and encourage conversations as well as offer their own insight.

Proposals should be submitted using the attached form below. Please include materials (videos, literature, student evaluations, list of possible references, letter of recommendations, etc.) from previous workshops, if possible. We also encourage you to include a detailed outline of your workshop so we can better understand the content. This material will greatly aid in our selection process. We also request that you send a brief biography and picture along with your proposal. You are welcome to submit proposals for more than one topic.

  • Standard A/V equipment (easel pad, overhead projector, markers, chalkboard, etc.) will be provided for you at no cost. However, a fee will be for other equipment such as lapel and wireless microphone, laptop, data projector, television, VCR. We ask that equipment request and payments be submitted by December 17, 2011.
